Biographical Summary

Jonathan Kaplan is a historian of modern German-Jewish history, with a focus on East German history and the concept of coming to terms with the National Socialist past. From 2024 to 2026, he was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for European Studies of the University of Verona (grant agreement No. 101153882). He received his PhD in Modern History from Freie Universität Berlin with a dissertation on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the National Socialist past. Previously, he served as a Junior Fellow at the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies (VWI), a Research Fellow for European-Jewish Studies at the Moses Mendelssohn Center, and a Postdoc Fellow at the Bucerius Institute for Research in Contemporary German History and Society at Haifa University. His second book project examines the interactions between Jewish organizations and individuals in the West and the East German government within the framework of Cold War politics.
