The Pacific Regional Office of the German Historical Institute Washington

The GHI Washington opened its Pacific Regional Office (GHI | PRO - formerly known as GHI West) in California in 2017 to facilitate cooperation with scholars and partner institutions in the western United States and Canada. Hosted by the UC Berkeley Institute of European Studies, the Pacific Regional Office supports research and scholarly cooperation in the GHI’s core fields:

  • German and European History,
  • North American and transatlantic history,
  • global and transnational history.

In addition, the Pacific Regional Office has a special research focus informed by the region’s history: the history of migrant knowledge. From Anchorage to San Diego, North America’s Pacific rim has long been the destination of migrants from across the continent and around the world. The region is home to countless communities shaped by the interaction of migrant cultures and influenced by the knowledge created in migration processes. The Pacific Regional Office’s program in the history of migrant knowledge is envisioned as an opportunity to build on the GHI’s long engagement with North American history and to incorporate the Pacific world more fully in it programs in global and transregional history.
