GHI and the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius to award Carl-Ludwig Holtfrerich with Helmut Schmidt-Prize in German-American Economic History

The German Historical Institute and the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius are pleased to announce Carl-Ludwig Holtfrerich of the Freie Universität Berlin as the 2015 winner of the sixth Helmut Schmidt-Prize in German-American Economic History. The prize pays tribute to the former German chancellor for his part in transforming the framework of transatlantic economic cooperation. A Professor Emeritus of Economics and Economic History at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin, Carl-Ludwig Holtfrerich will be honored for his wide-ranging contributions to the fields of monetary and financial history. His path-breaking publications include The German Inflation 1914-1923 (1980) and The Deutsche Bank, 1870-1995 (together with Hans Büschgen, Gerald Feldman, Lothar Gall, Harold James), which won the 1995 Financial Times/Booz Allen & Hamilton Global Business Book Award. Most recently he has contributed to the ongoing debate about labor market reforms in Germany with his book Wo sind die Jobs? Eine Streitschrift für mehr Arbeit ["Where are the Jobs? An Argument for More Work"].

The award ceremony will take place at the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC on Dec. 10, 2015, 6:00-8:00pm. Volker Berghahn (Columbia University) will deliver the laudation and the prizewinner, Carl-Ludwig Holtfrerich, will give a lecture titled "Austerity: Views of Chancellor Brüning's and President Hoover's Fiscal Policies from across the Atlantic, 1930-32."

The lecture and award ceremony at the GHI, 1607 New Hampshire Ave. NW (Dupont Circle area), is open to the public and will be followed by a reception.
