What are Protestants celebrating this year as they mark the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s posting of his Ninety-five Theses? What does the Reformation signify for our lives 500 years later? Is it still relevant to the social and political issues facing Germany and the United States today?
Dr. Margot Käßmann, Special Envoy of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) for the Anniversary of the Reformation 2017, and Dr. Olaf Wassmuth, pastor of the German Lutheran Church, Washington, DC, will explore these questions during a midday discussion at the German Historical Institute (GHI).
A theologian and ordained minister, Dr. Margot Käßmann has served as Council President of the EKD and was the long-time bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hannover. Käßmann, a native of Marburg, has her theological roots in the “Ökumene der weltweiten Christenheit”, a movement seeking greater unity among Christian denominations worldwide. An outspoken critic of right-wing extremist groups in Germany, Käßman has been a vocal advocate on a wide variety of issues at the intersection of religion and society.
