The Historian in Times of Globalization: Social Mimicry, Intellectual Potential, and Political Risks

Lutz Raphael has been professor of contemporary history at the University of Trier since 1996 and is the Gerda Henkel Visiting Professor at the LSE and the GHI London in the academic year 2015-16. A historian of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Europe, he has conducted research on a broad variety of topics, including the history of historiography, modern bureaucracies, the role of expert knowledge, and the societal development of Europe since the 1970s. He is currently working on a book on industrial work(ers) in times of globalization. In 2013 Prof. Raphael was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, Germany's most prestigious academic honor.
