Place, People, and Power in City Building in Postwar America

Lizabeth Cohen is the Dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and the Howard Mumford Jones Professor of American Studies in the History Department at Harvard University. She is the author of Making a New Deal: Industrial Workers in Chicago, 1919–1939 (Cambridge University Press, 1990, 2008, 2014)—winner of the Bancroft Prize and finalist for a Pulitzer Prize—and A Consumers’ Republic: The Politics of Mass Consumption in Postwar America (Knopf, 2003). She is currently finishing Saving America’s Cities: Ed Logue and the Struggle to Renew Urban America in the Suburban Age (forthcoming, Farrar, Straus & Giroux), which aims to present a more complex analysis of the costs and benefits of postwar urban renewal.
