Lecture and Exhibition Opening at the GHI | Speaker: Clayborne Carson (Stanford University)
Clayborne Carson is a professor of history at Stanford University and editor of the papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. He is founding director of Stanford's King Research and Education Institute. His other publications include: In Struggle: SNCC and the Black Awakening of the 1960s (1981) and a recent memoir, Martin's Dream: My Journey and the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. (2013). He has lectured throughout the United States and in many countries, including a tour of Germany in 2004 to promote the German edition of In Struggle (Zeiten des Kampfes (2004). At the age of 19, he attended the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Prof. Carson's lecture will also mark the opening of the GHI's exhibition " This Is the Day: The March on Washington, Photographs by Leonard Freed" curated by Paul Farber.
This keynote lecture and exhibition are part of the conference " The Dream and Its Untold Stories: The March on Washington and Its Legacy" taking place at the GHI from September 19 to 21.
