Germany as an Immigration Country: Labor Migration and the Refugee Influx

GHI-West is co-presenting a lecture by Dr. Cornelia Schu, Managing Director of the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration (SVR) and Director of the Expert Council’s Research Unit, on Tuesday, February 28, 4-5 pm PST at 201 Moses Hall, UC Berkeley. The event is hosted by the Institute of European Studies (IES) in collaboration with the American Council on Germany (San Francisco - Eric M. Warburg Chapter) and the Center for German and European Studies (CGES). Dr. Schu will be speaking about "Germany as an Immigration Country: Labor Migration and the Refugee Influx". 

Immigration and migration issues are currently at the top of the political agenda as all parties prepare their strategies for the upcoming federal elections in which Chancellor Merkel seeks her fourth term. More narrowly, the consequences of the refugee influx are passionately debated – a topic on which public opinion in Germany is sharply divided. More broadly, Germany aims to establish itself as a modern country of immigration competing for global talent. The presentation will introduce the current situation, give data on immigration in Germany, and identify challenges ahead.

Dr. Cornelia Schu serves as the SVR’s Managing Director as well as the Director of its Research Unit. Before joining the SVR, Dr. Schu led Stiftung Mercator’s thematic cluster on integration, where she gained extensive expertise in integration policy. She also worked as a Personal Assistant to the Secretary General and the Chairman of the German Council of Science and Humanities. Dr. Schu holds a Ph.D. in German Studies.
