GHI Director Simone Lässig Publishes Article on Refugee Scholars in Special Issue of Social Research Journal

GHI Director Simone Lässig has a new article on "Strategies and Mechanisms of Scholar Rescue: The Intellectual Migration of the 1930s Reconsidered," in the Winter 2017 special issue of the journal Social Research on "Refugee Scholarship: The Cross-Fertilization of Culture." In her article, Simone Lässig analyzes scholarly rescue of Jewish emigre scholars to North America in the early 20th century and asks whether the mechanisms developed to aid endangered scholars and scientists in the singular historical context of the 1930s could serve as a model for academic rescue efforts in the twenty-first century.

In December 2017, the GHI together with the New School for Social Research, the Leo-Baeck-Institute in New York and the German Research Foundation organized the workshop "Knowledge in Flight: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Scholar Rescue in North America" which also investigated this topic.
