German Heritage in Letters: Recovering the Hidden Stories of German Migration

The German Historical Institute is pleased to announce it has received funding from the “Deutschlandjahr USA” campaign of the German Federal Foreign Office to launch “German Heritage in Letters: Recovering the Hidden Stories of German Migration, 1840–1920.” The project will collect letters sent to the United States during the peak decades of German emigration in order to shed light on the experiences of those who remained in Germany. The project warmly encourages contributions of letters that are in private hands and will also partner with archives and special collections to gather this historic correspondence that reveals the unfolding of family histories on both sides of the Atlantic. When complete, a project website will be made available to the public as part of the celebration of 2019 as the Year of German-American Friendship.
