GHI Postdoctoral Fellowships

The German Historical Institute awards short-term fellowships to German and American postdoctoral scholars in the fields of German history, the history of German-American relations, the role of Germany and the United States in international relations, and American history. The program was introduced in 2000 to support research projects of scholars who have already completed their dissertation, with priority given to projects that are designed to work on the "second book" (Habilitation). All fellows are required to present their research at the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C. during their grant period. Depending on funds available, it may be possible to extend the scholarship by one month (up to a maximum duration of six months).
