The Pacific Regional Office of the German Historical Institute Washington

The GHI Washington DC has a new pacific regional office hosted by the Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley. Activities and programs at the Berkeley office reflect the GHI Washington’s full mission and thus foster research and academic cooperation in the fields of German and European history, American and transatlantic history, and global and transnational history.

The geographic and cultural characteristics of its location additionally serve as the baseline for the Pacific Regional Office’s research programs and overall strategic orientation. Inspired by the Bay Area’s particular mix of immigrant cultures from Europe, Asia, and Latin America, as well as the unique knowledge produced in such a diverse society, “History of Migrant Knowledge” has been conceptualized as our special research focus for the next several years. More generally, we will be connecting the GHI’s transatlantic approach with a transpacific approach to history.
