Research Fellow Mischa Honeck publishes article in Geschichte und Gesellschaft
The latest edition of Geschichte und Gesellschaft (vol. 42.3, 2016) includes an article by GHI research fellow Mischa Honeck entitled "The Power of Innocence Anglo-American Scouting and the Boyification of Empire." The article, which is based in part on research from his Habilitation, revisits the history of the Boy Scouts in the British and American empires as a means to investigate the relationship between youth, boyhood specifically, and empire. Rather than looking at the Boy Scouts as an institution solely tasked with masculinizing boys, the article considers the ways in which the Boy Scouts themselves were meaningful participants in an intergenerational process that both supported the construction of imperial masculinity and served as a purifying force for the older male participants.
