Environmental History Environmental history is a principal area of research interest at the German Historical Institute. Over the last few years, the GHI has sought the dialogue between environmental historians on both sides of the Atlantic. Our particular interest is in transatlantic and comparative topics and in the linkages between environment, politics, culture, and society. Since 1999, the GHI has organized lectures, symposia, workshops, and conferences on such topics as “Nature in German History,” “Environmentalism in Global Perspective,” “Exceptionalism in European Environmental History,” and “Landscapes and Roads in Europe and North America.” The Institute has sponsored panels at conferences including the European Society for Environmental History (ESEH) meetings, and it is the sponsor of the Publication Prize of the European Society for Environmental History.
