The Deutsches Literaturarchiv contains a collection of literary sources and scholarly contributions regarding comparative literary analysis from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. The collection includes documents on the reception of North American literature in Germany and German literature in the U.S., and relates to individual works and literature as a whole. Felix Paul Greve, who belonged to the Munich Bohème at the turn of the century, emigrated to Canada, where he played an important role in the literary history of that country. His early life is documented through his correspondence with Oscar H. Schmitz and Karl Wolfskehl.
Not yet documented in the catalogs is a large Karl May collection, donated to the library in 1997, that encompasses a large amount of Americana from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, mostly in German translation.
The Cotta archive contains reports by U.S. correspondents of the Allgemeine Zeitung, which was edited by Johann Friedrich Cotta and his successors, as well as the magazine Das Ausland (1828ff).
Finally, the manuscript division contains a substantial number of papers by authors who emigrated to the U.S. during the Third Reich.
Finding aids:
Material regarding the U.S. and Canada may be found by using the systematic catalog under the entries "Deutsche Literatur im Ausland" and "Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft." There are no printed finding aids available, except for an inventory of the Nachlässe and Sammlungen. Library acquisitions since 1999 are accessible via the public online catalog.

The most important entry regarding American history at the Institut für Zeitgeschichte archive is the microfilm of the records of the Office of Military Government for Germany, U.S. (OMGUS). It totals about six million documents on approximately 100,000 microfiches, equal to approximately one-third of the original material located at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The material consists of documents of the Military Government of the German states, records of the OMGUS High Commission in Berlin, and papers of American Allied staff officials and authorities.
The archive also holds a substantial collection of personal papers, which include material on German-American relations. The papers include those of Karl Frank (director of the Research Department of the American Association for a Democratic Germany); Kurt R. Grossmann (member of the World Jewish Congress); Hildegard Hamm-Brücher, Konrad Heiden, and Hans von Hentig (members of the Council for a Democratic Germany); Heinz Krekeler; Dr. Kurt Lachmann (correspondent for U.S. News and World Report; Ernst Langendorf (director of Radio Free Europe); Arnold Metzger; Karl Otto Paetel; and Otto Straßer (emigrated to Canada).
Other documents include Allied occupation authorities publications and press by anti-Nazi emigrants. Material on German emigration during the Third Reich, including to the United States and Canada, is abundant.
