Bridging the Atlantic Gap Print
German Business in the United States after the Second World War

Corinna Ludwig

I am in the process of developing my dissertation on German businesses in the United States, which will deal with the question in which ways German companies attempted to establish themselves in the American market after the Second World War, with a focus on intercultural exchange and transfer. Could German entrepreneurs draw on already existing business contacts with American companies? Which networks did they use? My research will also address specifically German experiences these businessmen brought to the United States and how these experiences, combined with their impressions of the "new world", might have influenced their corporate cultures. Lastly, this project emphasizes self-perceptions as well as social perceptions. How did these German entrepreneurs identify within the community of business migrants and how were they regarded by their American counterparts?
