State Secretary: GHI Role in International Scholarly Dialogue Print

The GHI and the other institutes of the DGIA have a crucial role to play as Germany seeks to strengthen international scholarly collaboration, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research Cornelia Quennet-Thielen observed during a visit to the GHI on April 12. Meeting with the GHI staff, Quennet-Thielen pointed to series of initiatives her ministry has undertaken to integrate Germany's universities and research institutes more fully within the international academic world. The ministry is trying not only to bring German researchers working abroad home, she noted, but also to expand opportunities for foreign scholars in Germany. Conversely, the ministry wants also to provide German scholars and scientists with the possibility of spending time abroad a goal served, as Quennet-Thielen underscored, by the GHI and the other DGIA institutes.

Quennet-Thielen visited the GHI to get a first-hand impression of one of the DGIA institutes. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research funds the DGIA, and Quennet-Thielen recently assumed responsibility within the ministry for the DGIA. In discussion with the GHI staff, she commended the institute for its success in fostering German-American scholarly dialogue and thereby contributing to the broader mission of the DGIA.
