Press Statement: Sept. 28th, 2009 (German Version) Conference Participant K.D. Wolff Denied Entry into the U.S. We regret to announce that on September 25, 2009, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service at JFK airport denied entry to Karl-Dietrich Wolff, who is a citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany. Mr. Wolff, a respected publisher and member of the German P.E.N. Club, had been invited by Vassar College and the German Historical Institute, Washington, DC, for an academic conference on African-American Civil Rights and Germany in the Twentieth Century to be held in Poughkeepsie, NY from October 1-4, 2009. Supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the conference is part of a transatlantic research project jointly organized by Vassar College, the German Historical Institute, and the Heidelberg Center for American Studies at the University of Heidelberg on The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany. The project was awarded the Julius E. Williams Distinguished Community Service Award 2009 of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) at the organization's centennial convention in July of this year. Mr. Wolff's invitation as a historical eyewitness is based on the fact that he participated in the beginning of the civil rights movement as a high school exchange student in the U.S. in the early 1960s and was the founder of the Black Panther Solidarity Committee in Germany in 1969. He could thus share his biographical experience with the international academic community assembled at the conference, which features, among others, such prominent speakers as Angela Davis. We are disappointed that Mr. Wolff will not be able to participate in person in the conference as planned and that his travel was so unexpectedly interrupted. Mr. Wolff will now participate in the conference via video-conferencing. We sincerely hope that the circumstances of the refusal of entry into the U.S. for Mr. Wolff will be clarified promptly by the appropriate authorities.

September 2009 der U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service am JFK Flughafen New York dem Bundesbürger Karl-Dietrich Wolff die Einreise in die USA verweigert hat. Der angesehene Verleger und Mitglied des Deutschen P.E.N.-Clubs war vom Vassar College und dem Deutschen Historischen Institut Washington für die wissenschaftliche Tagung African-American Civil Rights and Germany in the Twentieth Century [Afro-amerikanische Bürgerrechte und Deutschland im 20. Jahrhundert] vom 1.-4. Oktober 2009 in Poughkeepsie, New York eingeladen worden. Die durch den Deutschen Akademischen Austausch Dienst geförderte Tagung ist Teil eines transatlantischen Forschungsprojekts zum Thema Bürgerrechtsbewegung, afro-amerikanische Soldaten und Deutschland, das gemeinsam vom Vassar College, dem DHI und dem Heidelberger Zentrum für Amerikanistik an der Universität Heidelberg getragen wird. Dieses Projekt wurde im Juli 2009 mit dem Julius E. Williams Distinguished Community Service Award 2009 der NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) ausgezeichnet. Herr Wolff wurde als Zeitzeuge eingeladen. Er war in den frühen 1960er Jahren als Austauschschüler in den USA, agierte für die amerikanische Bürgerrechtsbewegung und gründete 1969 das Black-Panther-Solidaritätskomitee in Deutschland. Herr Wolff wollte seine persönlichen Erfahrungen mit der großen Zahl eingeladener Wissenschaftler teilen, die sich für die Tagung versammelt haben. Zugleich sollten andere prominente Zeitzeugen zu Worte kommen, etwa Angela Davis. Wir sind enttäuscht, dass Herr Wolff nicht wie geplant die Tagung persönlich besuchen kann und dass seine Reise so unerwartet unterbrochen wurde. Herr Wolff wird jetzt per Videokonferenzschaltung an der Tagung teilnehmen. Wir hoffen zugleich, dass die Gründe der Einreiseverweigerung von Herrn Wolff in die USA umgehend von den zuständigen Stellen aufgeklärt werden.
