His research focuses on the intersection of political and cultural history, as well as transnational history. Trained at the University of Göttingen, Amherst College and the University of Heidelberg, he is the author of The Other Alliance: Student Protest in West Germany & the United States in the Global Sixties (Princeton University Press, 2010). He is also co-editor of the publication series Protest, Culture and Society (Berghahn Books), as well as editor of 1968 in Europe: A History of Protest and Activism, 1956-77 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008) and 1968. Ein Handbuch zur Kultur- und Mediengeschichte (Metzler, 2007). He has taught at Amherst College, Rutgers University, and the University of Heidelberg. His latest book is a co-authored history of the experience of African-American soldiers in Germany in the 20th century entitled A Breath of Freedom: The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010). He is currently writing a biography of Petra Kelly, co-founder of the German Green Party and international peace activist.
