Biographical Summary Jasper M. Trautsch is a postdoctoral research fellow for North American history at the GHI. He studied communication science, North American studies, and history at the Free University of Berlin, the Sorbonne in Paris, and Tulane University in New Orleans. In 2011, he received his PhD for his dissertation "Inventing America: U.S. Foreign Policy and the Formation of National Identity, 1789-1815" from the Free University of Berlin, where he has also taught U.S. history as a lecturer. His main research interests are U.S. diplomatic history, the history of the early American republic, and transatlantic relations after 1945. Recently, he published "‘Mr. Madison's War' or the Dynamic of Early American Nationalism?" in Early American Studies. His current research project examines how cultural spaces such as the "West" were constructed in the publics of Europe and North America after the end of the Second World War.
