On June 8, 2011, Liz Mohn, Bertelsmann Foundation Vice Chairwoman, visited the German Historical Institute Washington. Ms. Mohn was in Washington for President Obama's state dinner in honor of Chancellor Angela Merkel and used the occasion to discuss future projects of the Bertelsmann Foundation and the GHI Washington. The meeting was attended by Hartmut Berghoff (Director, GHI), Marcus Gräser (Deputy Director, GHI), Annette Heuser (Executive Director, Bertelsmann Foundation, Washington DC), Karin Schlautmann (Senior Vice President, Bertelsmann Stiftung, Gütersloh), and Uwe Spiekermann (Deputy Director, GHI).

The Bertelsmann Foundation was founded in 1977 by Liz Mohn's husband, Reinhard Mohn. One of Germany's largest foundations, the Bertelsmann Foundation has an endowment that comprises more than 75% of the shares of Bertelsmann AG, Europe's largest media company.  In 2008 the Bertelsmann Foundation opened an office in Washington and created an independent foundation under the name "Bertelsmann Foundation North America." From 2009, the German Historical Institute and the Bertelsmann Foundation have co-organized several events, including a lecture series on the history of financial crises. The next joint event, on June 13, 2011, will be a panel discussion with Paul Nolte and Benjamin Barber on the role of public intellectuals today.
