Student Protest in West Germany & the United States in the Global Sixties

April 21, 2010, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

A book discussion at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars with
the author Martin Klimke (GHI)
Commentators: Michael Kazin (Professor of History, Georgetown University),
Jeremy Varon (Associate Professor of History, The New School for Social Research)

Many remember the student revolts of late sixties as chaotic and unorganized - or so they seemed at the time. In this book, historian Martin Klimke reexamines the movements as part of a transnational phenomenon, drawing on new evidence that demonstrates close ties between protests on both sides of the Atlantic. The political alliance between the governments in Washington and Bonn, he argues, were mirrored in the alliance between the underground networks of students in Germany and the United States who organized to challenge the status quo. Please join us for a fresh look at this dramatic moment in the history of the two societies. For more information and excerpts of the book, please visit www.otheralliance.com.
