Fritz Stern established himself as one of the preeminent interpreters of the German past with his first book, The Politics of Cultural Despair, in 1961. The publication of his memoirs Five Germanys I Have Known provides occasion to take stock of a lifetime’s reflections the central issues of modern history. This event is generously sponsored by the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, the BMW Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University, the German Historical Institute Washington, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Goethe-Institut Washington, and Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
