Virtual DCHDC Meetup: Putting Accessibility First

Dec 15, 2020

Speaker: Tiana Trutna (Metadata Cataloger for the Digital Preservation Archive of the Library + Archives at National Geographic Society)

For our last virtual Meetup in 2020, we would like to invite contributions on the theme of "Putting Accessibility First." The COVID-19 crisis has forced many individuals, institutions, and associations doing digital cultural heritage work to dramatically reconfigure how they collaborate with each other and the public. Among other things, this has led to a reimagining of what accessibility looks like, whether with respect to captioning and transcription practices, making collections available to both seasoned and "amateur" researchers, how rights and reproductions policies function, or other issues.

As usual, we are planning a set of talks on different aspects of this theme, but we also want to invite members of our community to share your reflections on how the meaning of and opportunities for accessibility have changed in your own experience in 2020. Please reach out to us on Twitter at @DCH_DC if you'd like to contribute!

Topic: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the National Geographic Society Archives

Digital Cultural Heritage DC is a monthly meetup group for people interested in collecting, preserving and making available digital cultural heritage information. Our meetings begin with a few short lightning talks followed by social information exchange. This is a great networking opportunity for students, as well as anyone interested in learning about digital collections in archives, museums, libraries or anywhere else. We're interested in digital content of all kinds, including film/video, still images, text, datasets, video games and pretty much anything of value in digital form. We are an open and friendly group, and welcome all comers.
