Defining the Modern Metropolis: Universal Exhibitions from the Mid-Nineteenth to the Mid-Twentieth Century

Friedrich Lenger is Professor of Modern History at the Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen. A renowned social historian, Lenger has published on a broad variety of topics, from the history of class formation to an influential biography of the German social scientist Werner Sombart. His most recent work has focused on urban history, including his newest monograph European Cities in the Modern Era, 1850-1914. Friedrich Lenger is the 2015 recipient of the prestigious Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize awarded by the German Research Foundation. He served as chair of the GHI's Academic Advisory Board from 2003 to 2009.
