Christof Mauch headed the Institute from 1999 to 2001 as Acting Director and as Director from 2002 to 2007. Hermann-Josef Rupieper †
Acting Director, 1987

Hermann-Josef Rupieper died of a heart ailment on August 30, 2004, while vacationing on the island of Crete. He will be remembered for the important organizational decisions he took and the numerous contacts with the academic community in Washington he created as the first Acting Director of the GHI. He remained connected to the GHI as a frequent visitor, external reviewer, and trusted advisor.
